Umbria is often referred to as the green heart of Italy. It is a landlocked province which straddles the sheltered part of the Appenines and contains some of the finest scenery in Italy. The main city of Umbria is the university town of Perugia while the other major centre is the industrial centre of Terni to the south. The jewels of Umbria however are the many medieval hilltop towns dotted all over province. Assisi, Gubbio, Montefalco and Spoleto are all excellent examples. Lakes Trasimeno, Piediluco and Corbara along with the Tevere river all supply the land with water and nurture the vines and the olives for which Umbria has acquired a noted reputation.
